Ruby Moon caught the eyes of many when she arrived at Longmeadow. She was hundreds of pounds underweight, and staff was unsure if she would make it through the week. She was scared and tired – it took patience and time to even unload her from the trailer on the day she arrived. After settling in, Ruby was given the help she needed to begin her rehabilitation process. It was a slow start, but after a few weeks, Ruby began to show signs of improvement. Her weight began to climb, and her demeanor perked up. After she gained a couple hundred pounds, a bit of her true personality began to show, and she showed us that she was not a fan of humans - but we couldn’t blame her. Ruby had spent the previous years of her life being neglected by humans, and she wasn’t sure she wanted to forgive them quite yet. She needed training with the farrier and more handling on the ground before she was ready to be evaluated by our trainers for riding. It took some time, but Ruby Moon eventually realized that not all humans were there to hurt her. We came with treats and food and soft hands. We taught her that behaving meant rewards, not punishment. We showed her what it felt like to be loved. After weeks of rehabilitation and work on the ground, Ruby Moon finally put her trust in us, and was ready to be evaluated.Upon evaluation, our trainers found that there is a possibility that she was started under saddle at one point in her life, but is no longer confident enough to carry a rider on her back. She will need a professional restart in order to be a safe horse for a confident intermediate rider. She would, however, be a great pasture pet for someone looking for companionship on the ground. Ruby Moon’s attitude has completely turned around since her arrival at the Ranch, and she is a great example of our mission here at Longmeadow. The once malnourished, spitfire mare is now a healthy horse with an appreciation for humans and their touch. Although she doesn’t quite enjoy grooming yet, she does love being around the company of our staff and will constantly approach staff members in the field without hesitation. She is easy to catch and would be best suited in a home with an intermediate handler if adopted as a pasture companion.
