Meet Kia! Kia is a transplant from Harmony Equine Center in Colorado. She was originally adopted from Harmony as a yearling and was later moved to Missouri with her owner. The owner’s reason for surrender was that while starting Kia under saddle, she noticed Kia was lame in her hinds.Over the course of several years, we had two of our trusted lameness vets evaluate Kia, including one that used a lameness locator to try to pinpoint the source. Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful in finding a clear diagnosis. We were then tasked to make the decision of what life would be best for Kia.Kia is a very social horse. She is always the first to greet us at the gate and, if not chosen, likes to accompany us to the horses in the pasture. She has a lot of personality and is a fun mare to interact with. As recommended by the vet, we spent a lot of time strengthening Kia and decided to continue her under saddle training. What stands out the most about Kia is her confidence. Even as a young horse she was bold under saddle and did not shy or spook easily. We have ridden her in the arena and taken her on rides around the ranch. She prefers to be ridden outdoors. She has a solid walk/trot and will move off leg pressure. We believe Kia would be happy as a companion horse or she could do light to moderate trail riding. She will require a confident intermediate rider if she goes as a riding horse, since she does still exhibit green horse behaviors from time to time. Kia would not be well suited for an adopter looking to ride in an arena, as circles tend to aggravate her hind end lameness.In the pasture, Kia tends to be toward the top of the pecking order. She has coexisted well with both mares and geldings but does assert herself as a lead mare. She is well behaved for both our vet and farrier. She loads easily in a trailer.
