Fendi made HSMO news when she arrived at Longmeadow in February as part of the infamous Benton County rescue. She and five other horses arrived at the Ranch malnourished and suffering from heavy parasite loads. They had no signs of previous vet, dental, or farrier care and were in desperate need of our help. After a few weeks of rehabilitation and routine vet checkups, Fendi’s health began to improve. Eventually, she was healthy enough to get her routine pregnancy check, and surprise…she was pregnant! Although we were glad that she was pregnant in our care, we knew that her history of neglect meant that she may not have a healthy foal. After a couple months of waiting, Fendi finally gave birth to her baby, and to our relief, her filly was healthy and happy!After the birth, Fendi displayed symptoms of an uncommon phenomenon called “foal rejection” and wanted nothing to do with her filly, now named Chanel. After multiple attempts to reconnect Fendi and Chanel, with help from our connection of vets, we realized that Chanel would simply not be safe if kept near her mother. For the sake of both, we separated the two. Now, two months later, Fendi and Chanel are flourishing at the Ranch. Although they were never reintroduced, both have made other equine friends and are getting along fine independently from one another.Fendi has since been evaluated by our trainer to see if she had any training under saddle in her past. Our trainer found that she was not comfortable being saddled and did not seem to understand girthing. She did, however, wear a bridle and understand bit pressure, and allowed our assistant trainer to sit on her bareback. Because of this, we believe Fendi has had some training in the past, but not much. Fendi would do best with a 60-day refresher with a professional trainer.Fendi is calm on the ground and easy to handle. She is polite and enjoys the company of people.
